How Does CPCS Training Work?

The route to a CPCS card depends on your experience, qualifications, and the type of card you need. In general, candidates working towards CPCS certification may need to complete the following:

CPCS theory test – assessing the underpinning knowledge required for the relevant plant category.
CPCS practical test – demonstrating the ability to operate the relevant plant safely and competently.
Relevant vocational qualification – required for progression to the CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card.

CPCS Red Trained Operator Card

The CPCS Red Trained Operator Card is intended for operators who have completed the required CPCS tests but have not yet achieved the relevant vocational qualification needed for the Blue Competent Operator Card.

To gain a Red Trained Operator Card, candidates must pass the relevant CPCS Health, Safety, and Environment test and the CPCS technical tests for the relevant plant category, including theory and practical elements. The Red Trained Operator Card is issued for two years.

During the life of the Red Trained Operator Card, the operator must register for and achieve the relevant NVQ or SVQ to progress to the Blue Competent Operator Card.

If you already have the required vocational qualification, you may be eligible for a different route.

CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card

The CPCS Blue Competent Operator Card demonstrates that an operator has the knowledge, practical ability, and relevant vocational qualification to operate a particular type of plant competently. The Blue Card is currently valid for five years.

To gain a Blue Competent Operator Card, candidates need to provide evidence of the relevant vocational qualification, pass the appropriate Health, Safety, and Environment test, and complete the CPCS theory and practical tests.

The Blue Card is intended for operators who have demonstrated that they can work unsupervised on the relevant type of plant.

For candidates progressing from a Red Trained Operator Card, achieving the relevant vocational qualification is an important part of the process. You can then upgrade the Red Card to a Blue Competent Operator Card once you meet the required criteria.

Experienced Worker Testing

If you already have substantial experience operating a particular type of construction plant, you may not need a full novice training course.

Experience alone does not guarantee readiness for assessment, as CPCS testing covers specific knowledge and practical requirements.

Refresher CPCS Training

Refresher training can help experienced operators who haven’t used a particular machine recently, need to rebuild confidence or are preparing for CPCS testing.

Which CPCS Course Do I Need?

No single CPCS course suits every plant operator. A candidate with little or no experience will generally need a full training course covering the practical skills and knowledge required to operate the relevant plant safely. An experienced operator may instead be suitable for experienced worker testing, with additional training provided where any gaps are identified.

Refresher training may be more appropriate where an operator already has experience but hasn’t used a particular machine recently.

Pre-course Requirements
