NPORS Courses

NPORS training courses provide recognised training and testing for plant operators working across construction, utilities, agriculture, logistics, marine, and other machinery sectors. Whether you’re new to plant operation, an experienced operator looking to gain an accredited card, or an employer looking to maintain a competent workforce, Trusted Construction Training can provide the appropriate NPORS training and testing for your requirements.

Based in the West Midlands, we offer NPORS operator training at our training facilities in Rugeley, Staffordshire, or at your site, provided you can meet the requirements stipulated by NPORS. With experienced instructors and a range of plant categories available, we can help you identify the right level of training, from full novice courses through to experienced worker testing and refresher training.

Venue

NPORS courses are available at our training facilities in Rugeley, Staffordshire, or at the client’s own site, provided all requirements set by NPORS and the relevant training and assessment standards are in place.

On-site training can be a convenient option for employers with several plant operators, particularly where the appropriate machinery and suitable training area are already available. Our training team can discuss your site requirements before confirming a booking.

Course Overview

The National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) is widely recognised as the UK’s leading accreditation, registration, and certification scheme for plant operators. It provides a route for operators to demonstrate their skills and competence when operating a wide range of plant and equipment across various industry sectors.

NPORS training and testing is delivered in line with published course objectives and learning outcomes derived from the National Occupational Standards. Depending on the category and the operator’s experience, candidates can take a full training course, refresher training, or experienced worker testing.

For operators working in construction, the NPORS/CSCS route provides access to the relevant construction operator cards. NPORS also offers its Traditional Card for operators working in sectors where a CSCS-logoed card is not required.

The appropriate route depends on the candidate’s role, industry, existing qualifications, and experience. If you’re unsure which NPORS card or training route you need, our training team can provide an honest answer and help identify the relevant requirements before you book.

Course Duration

NPORS training duration depends on the plant category, the candidate’s previous experience, and the required training level.

Before booking, we can profile the delegate’s operational experience and advise whether they require a full course, refresher training, or experienced worker testing. This pre-assessment helps ensure candidates receive the training they actually need rather than following a standard course length regardless of their existing skills.

Who are NPORS courses for?

NPORS courses are designed for plant operators who need recognised, high-quality training and certification for the machinery they operate as part of their role. This includes experienced operators who need to formalise their existing skills, as well as individuals who require full training before being assessed.

Our NPORS training is suitable for employers and operators across a range of industry-related sectors, including construction, highways, utilities, agriculture, logistics, warehousing, marine, and general plant operations.

The training can be particularly useful for businesses that need to demonstrate their workforce’s competence to principal contractors, employers, and site management teams. Depending on the operator’s circumstances, NPORS can provide a route towards an NPORS Traditional Card or an NPORS/CSCS card for construction.

Candidates who already hold an NPORS or CPCS licence should tell us when enquiring. Additional requirements may have relevance when applying for a new or replacement registration, depending on the candidate’s circumstances.

Key skills and competencies covered

NPORS training focuses on developing and assessing the practical skills required to operate the relevant plant or machinery safely and competently.

Course content varies by selected category, but training and assessment can cover areas such as pre-use checks, machine controls, safe operating procedures, site awareness, working around other people and equipment, positioning and manoeuvring, loading or excavation activities, shutdown procedures, and identifying potential hazards.

Candidates will work towards the published learning outcomes for their selected NPORS category. The aim is to ensure they can demonstrate the practical skills and knowledge needed to operate the equipment safely and effectively within their role.

For experienced operators, we may emphasise demonstrating existing competence through testing rather than completing a full novice course. If further training is needed, our instructors can provide targeted support before assessment.

Additional NPORS categories may be available depending on current instructor and equipment availability. If the category you require is not listed above, please speak to our training team.

NPORS Card Routes

The NPORS registration route depends on the sector in which the operator works and their existing qualifications.

NPORS Traditional Card

The NPORS Traditional Card is intended primarily for operators working outside construction sectors where an operator card bearing the CSCS logo is not required. It can be used across sectors including agriculture, utilities, logistics, marine and other areas where plant operator certification is required.

Traditional registrations can be issued for three or five years, depending on the requirements agreed between the operator, employer and training provider.

NPORS/CSCS Trained Operator Card

For construction plant operators, the NPORS/CSCS route provides a construction-specific registration. Candidates who complete the relevant NPORS training and testing but do not yet hold the required SVQ/NVQ can be issued with a Trained Operator Card valid for two years.

During this time, the operator must register for and achieve the relevant vocational qualification. Once the operator achieves the required qualification, they can progress to the Competent Operator Card.

NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator Card

The NPORS/CSCS Competent Operator Card is available to operators who hold the relevant SVQ/NVQ requirements for their plant category. The card is valid for five years and includes a CPD record/operator logbook.

The NPORS/CSCS route also requires you to have passed the relevant NPORS or CITB Health, Safety, and Environmental touchscreen test within the required two-year period before applying.

If you are unsure which NPORS card route applies to you, contact our training team before booking, and we can help establish the relevant requirements.

Pre-course Requirements

Requirements vary by NPORS registration route and the candidate’s previous experience.

• NPORS CSCS affiliated: Candidates must have passed the relevant NPORS or CITB Health, Safety, and Environmental touchscreen test within the required two-year period before applying for the card.

• NPORS Traditional Card: There is no equivalent CSCS route requirement, although candidates must still meet the requirements applicable to their selected category and registration.

Candidates who have previously held a CPCS or NPORS licence should advise us when enquiring. Depending on their circumstances, the awarding or registration body may request additional requirements.

If an NVQ or SVQ is required to progress to a Competent Operator Card, candidates must also meet the relevant qualification requirements.

Price

NPORS training and testing is charged at a day rate of £795 + VAT, plus £45 + VAT per person for the NPORS licence card.

The day rate allows employers to maximise the number of candidates trained or tested within the available time, depending on the category and NPORS testing ratios. For experienced worker testing, the typical ratios include:

  • Dumper: up to 6 experienced tests per day
  • Roller: up to 6 experienced tests per day
  • Telescopic Handler: up to 4 experienced tests per day
  • Excavator: up to 4 experienced tests per day
  • Slinger Signaller: up to 6 experienced tests per day

Where practical, we can also combine different categories during the same training or testing day. For example, an experienced operator may be able to complete Dumper, Roller and Excavator testing within the same allocated period, subject to the relevant requirements.

Course Completion and Certification

Candidates who complete the required NPORS training and testing can be registered for the relevant NPORS operator card.

The issued card depends on the registration route and the candidate’s qualifications. Construction operators may follow the NPORS/CSCS route, while operators working in other sectors may use the NPORS Traditional Card.

For candidates progressing through the NPORS/CSCS route, the Trained Operator Card provides a transitional route for operators who have not yet achieved the required vocational qualification. Once operators meet the relevant SVQ/NVQ requirements, we can issue a Competent Operator Card.

NPORS certification provides employers with evidence that operators have completed the required training and testing for their plant category.
